Is there a reason the NBA has stepped away from cartoonish gaming?

I loved Hang Time! I loved NBA Jam!

Sure it lacked a lot of the nuances the 2K series has going for it. It lacked the realism. What it didn't lack? The fun. I don't see why the NBA couldn't come up with a graphically superior game that harkens back to the times where you could name your player Large Marge & give her a Werewolf face right before doing a rocket propelled dunk in your friends face? It makes no sense! Those were the days...

One of my favorite all time games was NBA JAM for the Super Nintendo, I'm so glad they brought it back a few years ago, but they should have added in more things.

Another one of the great sports games is NFL Blitz, it would be AMAZING to have a basketball version of it. Maybe I will just have to buy an old PS2 and play streetball to get my fix.
