Pistons president Joe Dumars is expected to resign before his contract expires on July 1, league executives have told ESPN.com.

Dumars Dead Last

An ESPN Forecast panel rated every owner, basketball decision-maker and coach from 0 to 10 -- and Joe Dumars came in last.

The Pistons signed high-priced free agents Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings in the offseason but have staggered to a disappointing 28-49 record that has them out of playoff contention.

The Detroit News reported earlier Tuesday that Dumars was planning to resign, possibly as early as this week.

Dumars has spent 29 years with the franchise, as both a player and an executive, and has had a hand in every Detroit title. Drafted in 1985, he retired as a player in 1999 and took over as Pistons president in 2000. His changes led to a title in 2004, followed by another Finals appearance the next season.

finally. Who actually thought Jennings-Smith-Monroe-Drummond would work?

I remember some of the threads about this team before the season.

Quite a bit of people talked about spacing issues not being that big a deal, "they'll work it out", make it up on defense with 3 bigs etc.

But it doesn't work, same with Asik and Howard in Houston, Chandler, Amare and Melo in New York. You need spacing and players who can shoot the ball and drive from the 3pt line.

I wanna say a couple of things about Dumars and GMs in general. Dumars started out pretty good. He had a good vision and hired some good coaches. He made a bonehead move with Darko but that could have happened to anyone. He later started on a downward spiral into absolute embarrassment and has really hamstrung the franchise for a little while. He's so far removed from their last championship or decent season that people forget that he really was a good executive at one time. If you look at other GMs/presidents you may notice that they often times have a lifespan. They may start out good and then turn bad. Petrie assembled good teams in Sacto and then became an idiot somehow. Mitch was good in LA and has made some awful moves recently. Riley made a huge mistake signing Juwan Howard in Miami and luckily for him the league blocked that move. What I'm saying is that often times GMs are just one bad move from ruining a franchise and often times what they do as a reaction to their bad moves ends up hurting more. Assembling a team is really difficult and you also need lots of luck. It's impossible to predict how a player might react to a change of scenery or coach or whatever. It's even more difficult to draft well. Drafting is extremely hard and hindsight is always 20/20. Being a GM/president is not an easy job.
